In the nineteenth century, smallpox ravaged through the United States and Canada. At this time, a botanical preparation, derived from the carnivorous plant Sarracenia purpurea, was proclaimed as being a successful therapy for smallpox infections.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric cancer. Due to its high global prevalence and uprising resistance to available antibiotics, efforts are now directed to identify alternative source to treat and prevent associated disorders. In the present study, effect of selected indigenous medicinal plants of Pakistan was evaluated on the secretion of interleukin-8 (IL-8) and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a bid to rationalize their medicinal use and to examine the anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective effects in gastric epithelial cells.

Danshen, the dried root and rhizome of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, is a widely used medicinal plant for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases in China and a complementary medicine in the West. Danshen is indexed in the 2010 Chinese Pharmacopoeia, with more than 35 formulations and concoctions containing Danshen water-extracts, ethanolic extracts or their combination, which are rich in phenolic acids and different levels of tanshinones.

SCOPE: The incidence of cancer is significantly lower in regions where turmeric is heavily consumed. Women carrying BRCA1 mutations have a higher risk of developing ovarian cancers. Options to reduce this risk are largely limited to prophylactic surgery, which leads to a decrease in the quality of life and permanently damages fertility. There is a obvious and an urgent need to identify a noninvasive approach to effectively prevent the ovarian cancer risk, specifically for those women of reproductive age. Our previous studies showed that the use of the herbal remedy Ginkgo biloba may reduce the risk for nonmucinous ovarian cancer.
